Goodreads page:  https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15990969-ten-tiny-breaths?ac=1

My rating: 3.5/5

Summary/plot:
The story follows 20 years old Kacey who runs away with her sister to Miami so that the two can start a new life and burry their past. This past is full of sadness, four years earlier, the two lost their parents in a tragic accident caused by a drunk driver, accident which also lead to the death of Kacey's besti friend and boyfriend that were in the same car as her and her family.Adter 4 years spent with their aunt and uncle, they finally manage to escape, but the new life they hope for might just take a turn neither was actually expecting.
Thoughts:
The first thing the book made me realise is that I am not a New Adult kinda gal'.Although this is just genre appropriate and that the book is still quite mild for the genre (according to my New Adult loving friend Julia),I was still pretty uncomfortable quite a few times while reading the book.Yes,I shall keep my distance from this genre.
Now let's get to the things that are more related to the book and not to myself.I did enjoy the book. This might be because of the writing style which was quite good,or the Hannah Montana references that won me over or maybe just my affinity for screwed-up,messed-up,broken characters and possible character development. That might be it.
I was not sure whether I was going to like the main character for the most part, but I decided that if I were to choose,I do.She is pretty great,if you ignore her obsession with that one romantic interest of hers. She was tough and just the rigth level of messed up (because,as said before,I somehow tend to like those characters best, could be because I somehow relate to them,I don't know for sure,to be quite honest),she went on with her life and she was just a great strong character,in my opinion.I think the same could be said about Trent (aka the love interest),just the right level of messed up,still strong and swoon-worthy considering the description (quite a charming fellow!).Also, speaking of characters,I thought that the others were pretty great themselves.I loved Livie,-the sister-,Storm and Mia,-the neighbours-,officer Dan (doh!),Cain,Tanner and so on.I just admire the level of attention given to each of the characters and while I sort of wish we got to know more about those parents of the girls,I still enjoyed everyone else's character development.I might say that the development of the main character and her love interest could've been taken slowlier and given more details,it was still nice and enjoyable.
Now let's get to the one part we must talk about even though I usually want to roll my eyes because of.Romance.I already meantioned that the rather, ummm, steamy (?) scenes made me a bit uncomfortable,I am not a great source to help make an idea of that because I might be a bit of a prude,I guess.Anyway,I did get the feel that everything was a bit insta-love-y at first and still think of it that way.It sort of felt rush and odd and eye roll worthy,if I'm to be honest. There were some nice scenes of the couple,I just thought it was all a bit too needy and too rushed, that's it.Also, the 'plot twist' was a bit obvious for my taste (but then again, plot twists that I can't predict are my most frustrating kind of book related things,I supposed).
Also,I am still left a bit frustrated about the title of the book and the mantra,
'Just breath ...
Ten little breaths ...
Seize them ...
Feel them ...
Love them ... '
I like it,it sounds fancy and has a nice ring to it,I just don't exactly get it?While I do enjoy an element of mystery and something that can make me want to go all Hazel Grace on an author,I'd rather this would've been made obvious. While I have a few theories of my own about how and what and why,I still can't seem to be able to explain all of it.

Gods, monsters and ugly sea fish - Frances Hardinge's DEEPLIGHT

Rating:  ★★★.75 / 5 Plot: For centuries the gods of the Undersea ruled the islands of the Myriad through awe and terror: they were very real, and very dangerous. Sacrifices were hurled into the waters to appease them, and every boat was painted with pleading eyes to entreat their mercy. They were served, feared and adored. Then, thirty years ago, the gods rose up in madness and tore each other apart. Now, none remain. The islands have recovered and the people have patched their battered ships and moved on. On one of these islands live Hark and his best friend Jelt. To them, the gods are nothing but a collection of valuable scraps to be scavenged from the ocean and sold. But now something is pulsing beneath the waves, calling to someone brave enough to retrieve it. Review: The more I think about this book, the more in awe I am even though it's been a while since I've finished it. I had heard people singing Hardinge's praise for age...
