So today in my English class we just sat and our teacher wanted us to do something Christmasy,so she brought us a short summary thingy of 'A Christmas Carol' to read and discuss it afterwards.
I had read this before, and seen about a thousand movie adaptasions, but I was still keen on it.If you don't know the story,it is mainly about this rich old guy who is just very mean and cheap and hates Christmas because his life was always very sad.Or something. So on Christmas evening, after he refuses to give money to the poor and do something nice for one of his employess,he is visited by the spirit of his dead business partener, who is in chains because of everything bad he had done in his life and wants to help Snooge(I think this was the guy's name) avoid such a fate. So,he just tells him that he's going to be visited by three ghosts and he'll hopefully realise what he's doing wrong.
First,it is the Ghost of Christmas Past, which shows him his past(obviously),and how Christmas was never happy or anything.Basically,he sees himself as a sad little child on Christmas day,and then he sees himself having to break up with the only girl he'd ever loved, only because she was poor and it wouldn't have been right to wed her. Then, there comes the Ghost of the Christmas Present. This one takes him to see the kids in the street, with nothing to eat,and then it takes him to his employee's house, where he sees all the family gathered around this super tiny pudding, which is sad, especially since the guy is really trying to act happy and excited about Christmas, despite his son Tiny Tim being really sick.Of course, when the last ghos come(of Christmas Future,if it wasn't obvious) he sees his death, and everyone seems to be quite fond of the idea of the old man being dead, and he also sees the other family crying for Tiny Tim who was also dead,so it's quite tragic.
Anyway,so the guy wakes up on Christmas morning (?) and magically becomes good and changes everything and helps people and ugh.Ain't Christmas pretty?
I just hate this mentality.
Why is it that we should suddenly become better on Christmas and be douchebags every other day of the year?Really now.I already have a post on Christmas and why I dislike it,so I am not going to repeat all that once again, but, seriously,it's like saying that you should only be in love fore Valentine's Day.
I mean,I really don't believe in everyone being a better person "just for the sake of Christmas" or because of the Christmas spirit or whatever.Listen love, you could be Queen Elizabeth the First, and if you're a dirtbag during the other 364 days of the year, but you're just nicer on Christmas or give me a Christmas present,I don't believe I'll just be a nice person and appreciate and all that. No,I'll think you're either stupid or just fake as hell.I repeat,if you want to be nice,be nice.If you want to give out presents, give presents.
We have this preconcieved idea of how we should only do a certain thing because that's how it should be done, and there's a specific time and place for that, and yada yada yada.Truth is,we need no reason to do the things we want to do as long as we feel like it.If you want a certain dress,or skirt,or book,or I don't even know, perfume, curling wand or anything, generally, you just have to make sure you want it,save up for it and get it for yourself.Sata ain't gonna bring you a brain or a heart.
We are responsible of our actions and it's time for us to stop making up situations, reasons or excuses to start behaving a certain way.
Love always,
Me.
